If our elected politicians actually passed what the people want instead of a half assed system that no one wants I would be ok. At least canadians have a full system that they approved. I agree with national health care, but that's not what we are getting.

I'm choosing to be optimistic and considering this the first of many baby steps. The insurance companies will win either way with this bill, but at least with its passage, they will be slightly reigned in. As long as there is no campaign finance reform, there won't be real reform in how the country operates in any capacity. No one is able to get a clear, fact-based message out because the people/corporations with the longest reach and most pull can control the message to benefit them. They were able to get most Americans to not understand the word "option"! Now that's power. It also points out how sad our education in this country is and how partisan and powerful our media is.
It is fascinating speaking with doctors about this debate. Most roll their eyes at the messages coming out and wonder why they aren't being listened to since they are the ones delivering health care - fyi, most felt the House bill was superior to the Senate bill and both are better than the current environment, but they would not necessarily agree with single payer because they want to get paid too.

Nik, you are being a bit too machiavellian. The American people are fat, lazy and stupid. The constitution lauds "the people" but it was written when the people who could vote were educated land owners. The American people want services but dont want to pay for it. They scream for it with the right side of their brains but decry it with their left side. I long for a benevolent dictatorship where the stupid people's influence (liberal and conservative) is silenced.
